10-31-2003 Finland is the world's most competitive Economy

The United States scored high on technology but weak on the quality of its public institutions and economic environment, particularly public finances, where it ranked 50th.

The United States was pulled down by concerns about rising trade protection and tightening capital availability.

"If there is one lesson from our exercise, it is that the strength and coherence of government policies have an enormous bearing on a country's ranking," Augusto Lopez-Claros, chief economist of the WEF, said in a statement.

Congratulations Finland :beer::cool::beer:

I'm not surprised. I'm sure there will be many of the AT Economist's that disagree with the World Economist's.

That is not possible. Finland is one of those evil leftish countries with socialized healthcare and extensive social programs
Only the USA can have a real competitive economy.
The researchers from the word economic forum were bribed by a communist EU bureaucrat working in Brussels

Ever heard of school? Our schools are so far behind it might as well be 1903 not 2003. (No disrespect meant for any Teachers, they know how bad it is BTW)

Just like that OK with #2, wow, you lay down easy, pretty much like the general populace of the U.S. now.

How can a country with so much snow be ranked #1, Robert asked from sunny Florida? :)

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Pony trekking or camping,
Or just watching TV.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
It's the country for me.

You're so near to Russia,
So far from Japan,
Quite a long way from Cairo,
Lots of miles from Vietnam.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Eating breakfast or dinner,
Or snack lunch in the hall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

You're so sadly neglected
And often ignored,
A poor second to Belgium,
When going abroad.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

Oh, but can summertime be ever so gorgeous up there.

Anyway, these particular findings aren't really surprising. Finland has come a long way since currency devaluation in 1991. Valmet, Nokia and Fiskars are prime examples of quality and competitiveness.

Easy there tiger... I was just askin....

If you actually read the report, you'll see that Finland and the United States trade spots for #1 all the time... So it's a pretty close comparison... And why would I not be proud of my country being ranked 2nd in the whole world?... And Finland's a great country... why should we be ashamed to be behind them.

Lie down?!?! By being proud of the country, I'm lying down?... OF COURSE WE CAN BE BETTER!!! Even Finland can be better... Who ever said anything about giving up....

Whats with the overanxiousness to diss the US?... Are you french or something?

I'm a bit surprised the US finished that high...especially above Sweden.

Sweden has been hit especially hard in the manufacturing sector as well though.

What we need is higher taxes and to pay our teachers more!! That will solve all of our problems!

Yea, let me tell you, I'm just swimming in the money earning a big fat $23,000. Plus I get to spend my own money on supplies because the disstrict doesn't have the funds to pay for it. If there's a lot of money around, I'm not seeing it at the teacher/student level. I really don't care about making huge money, but at least pay for the supplies.

Yeah throwing more money won't work, parents participating in theor childs education is the only way. You can give every child in the US a Laptop but if their parents don't make them do their Homework or take an active role in their education all that would happen is that we would have a bunch of ignorant snotgobblers that are good at Unreal Tournament

i've never understood the point of putting computers at every desk anyway. and the people who put 3 computers in a classroom are just stupid. you hve 25 kids, how are you going to use 3 computers?

Piano Man:

Teachers should be paid about twice what many are earning, especially when one considers the problems they face daily in the run down buildings we call schools. Iraq will have some nice new schools, though, and thank you for making YOUR contribution to international education.

Anyway, the problems are not with the schools but with the parents who buy their kids computers, video game players, mp3 players, t.v.s in their rooms, etc., and don't control the amount of time kids spend on those electronic devices. Drugs are easily available. I'd mention vibrators, but why would teenagers need them? Sex is plentiful..... School work is in about 8th place in most homes. Compare the U.S. with Japan, Germany, England, France, even Greece! (The Greeks I know are all very hard workers.... but I digress.)

Just about the only thing parents in this country ARE liberal about is their kids education. And that is the one area where they should be Attila The Hun. :)
