If I have a relatively small website for showcasing some products I am selling on a different site and I had these two connections available how many users can my site handle if I had a 56k dial-up or a basic DSL line?
If you're hoping to sell something, trying to do so off of an unreliable service like a dial up (especially dialup!!!) or residential dsl account is a bad idea. Either look into something like a 56k frame relay, or really the most economical solution would be a professional host. I'd highly recommend Pair Networks Not only might hosting a server on your service violate your terms of service, but also when you call your ISP to complain about losing sales because of your residental account not being available 24/7 (like a business account should) we'll close your account, advise you to get a business account and laugh when we hang up 😉
Trust me, just host it on a professional host or get a business class circuit 🙂
Remember that, depending on your connect speed, your upstream is going to be about 28-33K. This could handle less then ten people at once, but it will be really slow.
If you can get cable or DSL, do so! Make sure your upstream wil be at least 180K.
You should just get a free host and either go with whatever domain you can get, or pay some measely price to get one like "whoadude.com" instead of yourhost/whoadude or whoadude.yourhost.com. Brinkster has a good free deal that gives you 30MB of space and they are pretty fast (no FTP uploads though).
