Thats probably something to do with the ammount of hardware you can change before it requires re-activation.
The OS itself, can only be installed (and used) on one machine (at a time)
You could in theory install it on as many machines as you wished, but you have to activate the OS or its useless after 30 days.
If you activated one machine, then tried to activate another soon after, you would have to call MS who would then become suspicious as to why all the hardware had changed from the original activation.

... who would then probably block the key from being used again.

Short answer: one.

thanks. I was just wondering because I thought someone had told me 3 at one point. thanks for the heads up.

It's always been one, it is one, and it will probably always be one.

I redid an XP Home installation after activation and was surprised that it let me activate a second time. In a similar situation with XP Pro I had to call M$.

After 90 or 120 days, I forgot which, you can install it on another machine without any trouble. I don't know about the legality of the issue though.

Edit: Im pretty sure its 120 days.

You can legally install it on as many machines as you have licenses for. In your case you have a single license, their are other scenarios (e.g. MSDN comes with licenses for 10 copies on the same key).

Odd. I put the XP Pro SP2 disc that came with a Dell laptop on two other desktop computers and have had no trouble. I've done the same with other M$ products I've owned, and got the same results. I think they understand that nobody in their right mind is gonna buy the same software multiple times to use on their own equipment.
