Don't most astronomers believe the universe is effectively infinitely large? Obviously this is theory, and there are a lot of particles of sand on earth, but I have to side with the stars . . .

yeah i think i gotta side with stars...but it seems crazy to think about it...because think how many pieces of sand are in a sand box...

i mean then u have multiply that by trillions to get the size of 1 desert

I thought they had done an estimate on the number of atoms in the universe, some really big number but finite. If someone can find that they can guestimate the number of stars in the universe.

Then we just need someone to go to the beach and start counting the sand. :p

hm..you're on a posting spree today, aren't ya? heehee.

And then think about all the windows made from that sand. ;)

Was watching something on Discovery the other day about this very issue. Discovery Channel says more stars, so that's what I'm going with.

damn dude, see, you oculd be in for it, cuz the amount of sand is equal to the amount of stone we can crush, and so you gotta think of the amount of stone we have on earth. if it was a competition i believe sand would win, cuz it could be made almost infinately from the breaking of stones.

I don't think so, since it started with a single point, then there was a big bang where it is always expanding. Since it is growing, it can't be infinite, so there must be an ever expanding outer edge.

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.
Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide.
We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go 'round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's ah heck all down here on Earth.

I feel we all need to spend more time on the sand looking at the stars, especially with our SO. :D:heart:

Too bad there's no such thing as "almost infinite" :)

There's a million-trillion grains of sand and a trillion-trillion stars.
