Number of drives allowed by motherboard

If mother board says
number of Seriel ATA channels 7
number of IDE channels 1

then this simply means you can connect 7 SATA and one IDE to it, right?

You can connect 2 drives to the IDE channel. Most IDE channels do towards optical drives as most are still PATA, as well as old hard drives. You are correct about the 7 SATA drives.

Seven seems like a strange number of SATA ports. Which motherboard is this? Or did you simply pick an arbitrary number?
