null modem cable for internet sharing?

this is also in the general hardware, but i thought this would also be a nice place for it

i have a null modem cable that i used before i got my network to transfer files (about 12kbps)...now that i have the network transfering is a lot faster, and i can use proxy to share my dial up (soon to be DSL) , but still...is it possible to have it be a part in internet sharing using proxy or some other special software?
the cable itself is a 25female - 25 female...i have converters on either side to connect them both to serial port .

I suspect that you'd have to run a PPP server on one of the machines, and a PPP client on the other. Then you could "dial up" using PPP over the serial cable and establish a connection.

But that's a lot of trouble to go through for such a slow connection, especially since you already have a much faster Ethernet network available. Why bother?

i was just trying to save on NICs...or maybe find something in my garage that only has ISA.....and the cable is just kinda here....

In that case I'd recommend checking out computer "clone" stores in your area, many of which carry used equipment. I frequently see old ISA NICS at these places for $3 or less.
