well I am kicking myself as I said I wasn't going to bother with flashing the bios as the system was fine however I just discovered that magic bios utility and decided why not test it out....flashed the bios and restarted the system only to discover that I could no longer boot...reflashed back to the older bios and the problem persisted...tried booting in safe mode only to have it hand at MUP or something...oh well trying a repair now on windows.

well this is weird, upon running a reinstall over XP my setup screen just started flashing over and over again...taking the advice from another board I tried unplugging my USB mouse and viola it continued on...too bad I didn't read that first as it could have been my issue all along...strange though

well after unplugging the mouse all seems ok so far, just waiting to see if this reinstall works out but I am getting hard drive activity...I guess it was time for this mouse to go but that was one of the oddest things I have seen to date. TG for this laptop I have or else I would be sunk

bozack, sorry to hear about your problem, dude.

I have NEVER used Windows Flash or Magic Flash. I use AWDFLASH in DOS.

But, honestly, I don' think that is your problem. When you flashed the BIOS, you lose your settings (not always but quite often) so I always get into BIOS after a flash and check my settings before loading Windows.

In you case, your USB mouse and legacy USB were disabled.

;)

What magic BIOS utility?

Magic BIOS is the name of Epox's Windows-based BIOS update utility.

Oh, that sounds dangerous. It's so easy to make a boot diskette with UPDATE an RESTORE on it, too. Why bother trying to flash in Windows?

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS clear your CMOS settings following a BIOS flash. My system appeared to be nuked from a BIOS flash until i actually set the CMOS jumper to the clear position out of desperation, (the PC wasn't even POSTing, just a black screen.) After clearing CMOS settings, things roared to life, which now leaves only my mouse issue.

Will a USB to PS2 convertor on the mouse solve the mouse problem?

in theory I would assume it would...

Honestly on my second attempt at a flash it didn't happen with the mouse so I don't know...all I know is the new bios version for some reason isn't working on my machine and I have read from others that they have problems as well...

seeing as I don't need this revision I think I will take a pass, but I hope that this doesn't mean problems down the road.

I have never had to hard clear bios settings after a flash...

Ya, and the EPoX FAQs say to just go into BIOS and Restore Defaults after a new flash.
