Lately it seems like its been the fashionable thing to bitch about the movies that are being produced by the Hollywood machine. There have been a number of threads here where people say that the current slump in Hollywood profits is due to the fact that only crap is coming from our left coast. Well, here is your chance to really hammer that fact home. Below is a link to a movie that 1) is nearly 100 years old, 2) has no sound, 3) has really awful picture quality, 4) only runs for about an hour, and 5) has no 'splosions or bewbs. And yet, dear prospective challenge participant, I submit to you that this flick will completely engross you in its story, and will blow your mind by the time it is over and you get a chance to think about the whole thing.

To participate in the challenge, do the following:

1. Download and watch this film from the link below. The copyright on the film has expired, so the download is legal. Also, the film runs at just around 1 hour, so this little exercise won't take up much of your day.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

IMDB reference: Link

2. After watching it, give yourself some time to digest the whole film, especially the ending. It took me about an hour for it to really sink in, at which time I immediately watched it again.

3. Post your thoughts about the flick here. Spoilers are OK

Huh? No animals die in the movie. The only animal in the whole movie is a monkey at the fair.

I don't remember. Maybe it was Nosferatu I'm thinking about.

I watched it just now. I'm not sure that I understood the ending, however.

I did like the use of the surreal backdrops throughout the movie.

Perhaps that's a clue. Was this all a dream of a mental patient?

Heavy Spoilers

Yes - the entire movie is the dream of an insane individual, with the exceptions of the opening scene and the ending sequence. If you watch the movie again armed with that knowledge, the entire thing makes a whole lot of sense.

I'll bet you didn't see it coming. Its one of the best twist endings I think I've ever seen, but at the same time the "twist" is in plain view throughtout the whole movie.
