For maybe 12 years, I've managed my personal, professional and business documents with PaperPort. I had to upgrade with new operating systems, and Nuance uses their Update Manager as a sales gimmick in addition to reliable update servicing.
I couldn't even get PaperPort 12 to install on one VISTA 64 system -- an error that says something like "insufficient permissions to access key" and references to MSXML 4.0. That system has Office 2007, and I thought I saw someplace on some forum that PaperPort didn't play nice with Office 2007, but I'm not completely sure such is the problem.
But the other VISTA 64 system does not have an Office 2007 installation. PaperPort 11 and PaperPort 12 seem reasonably stable, although multiple document conversions of the proprietary MAX wrapper format lead to a "Paperport not responding" crash. This may be a network problem -- I cannot tell. Not really that likely. But it seems stable for individual MAX to PDF conversions.
Because of these troubles, I've chosen to convert all the MAX files to PDF, and use Presto! PageManager 7 and 7.5 Deluxe to access my document scans. I've discovered that the "Enhance->Contrast-and-Brightness" changes I made to the MAX files don't persist in the PDF conversions, unless I use a utility like PrimoPDF to "print" the PDFs. PageManager doesn't have a feature for changing document Contrast and Brightness.
Who knows of a better document management program that has features equal to PaperPort? And how much does it cost? Who makes it?
