Didn't AnandTech give this drive very high marks in its round-up (two or three months ago)? Since that time, they've added -R(W) burning via firmware. I'd assume that this is still a solid drive.

-SUO, happy with a $45 (AR, of course) LiteOn LDW-411S

Just FYI

Nu Tech is owned by Quanta Storage Inc (the top optical manufacturer for Dell, HP/Compaq, Gateway, Apple, etc.)

Am I interpreting it correctly that it is actually about 75 bucks, after the free shipping?

Nu Tech is own by Quanta Storage Inc (Quanta computer).
All the drives are manufactured by QSI. Not NEC.
NEC OEM from someone...anyone know??

Sorry, that turns out not to be the case. Nec makes their own drives. Furthermore, the Pioneer 107 8x DVD recorder is using the Nec drive internals.

This drive is one great deal. Upgradeable with firmware updates to 8x for both types of media. My first drive and after about 25 discs, both + and - media, not one coaster. Burns at 40x for CDRs as well.
As pointed out, NuTech is no newbie to the burner field. They seem to know what they are doing.

Hard to find a better deal.

This drive is pretty good. One thing, if you buy the Fry's GQ brand CDrs they will only burn at 16x. Tried two different spindles and had the same results. Tried some TDK and Fuji and burned at full speed. Other than that this drive is lightning fast.
