I've been getting this error trying to restore operating system to gateway laptop (450rog).

I did a google search for possible causes and found memory or bios should be the problem. I've tried 3 different memory sticks, new hard drive, and updated bios. Also, I have tried different operating system disks, but still get error.

Anyone have any other possible fixes to the issue?

Go to Microsoft and look for article 310064, it sounds like what your getting. Looks like there is a work around. Or from another article I found some one suggest to "try to clear CMOS. If it fails, remove surplus memory, then remove all unnecessary peripherals to boot". Good luck!

This is a laptop, so can't really remove many peripherals. I will try removing internal wireless card. It only has 1 stick of memory, so no surplus memory to remove. I've tried 3 different memory modules in both locations too. Also, tried loading bios defaults.

This laptop is driving me crazy!

Could you try running Memtest.
Although the RAM might be ok, there might be a problem with the way the mobo addresses it.
Leave it running overnite and one way or another, we'll be closer to a solution.

Could you give us some more details about the restore?

What backup set are you using? Is it from the same machine? If not which one?
What backup software? Detail what you did during the restore.

It kinda smells like a hal issue.

The restore disks came with the laptop.

The restore disks copies the files to the hard drive then boots off the hard drive to install OS.

I tried a different XP full install disk that boots off the CD-ROM to install OS too.

Either way booting off hard drive or CD-ROM gets that error during install?

Also, the laptop doesn't have the option to disable ACPI in the bios. Tried F7 as suggested by Microsoft, but still get error.

I'm wondering if Gateway is pulling a fast one. I flashed the bios with the most recent version after getting the error thinking it may help. From Gateway website, "This update resolves an issue when running a memory test with certain memory modules". It didn't help either.

Do you think I'm getting a false pass in the memtest?

I've never had this many problems trying to install XP on a PC ever! Not sure if there is much more I can try?
