Would Win2k run better on NTFS than on FAT32? Is there a big advantge to NTFS for IE, Email, Office, ICQ, Mp3s, and programming? (Basically anything but games)? Also is it better for Virtual Memory to have the partition as NTFS? (I'm going to have Win2k and Win98SE on there so it would be somewhat convient, but not required to have all the partitions FAT32) Does Win2k have an FDISK type thing that can make FAT32 and NTFS partitions?

I want to dual boot Win98SE and Win2k (well actually Tri, Linux is in there to).

Can I do this with the Upgrade version of Win2000, because it would be an upgrade from Win98SE, but I'd be leaving Win98 on there as well.

Or do I need the full version?
And the upgrade can of course install all the service packs the Full can right (be kind of dumb if it couldn't...but well MS is kind of dumb at times)

(I presume that the upgrade version is just the full version that checks for a previous Windows version, but I just want to make sure)

No advantage between NTFS and FAT32. FAT32 has tested slightly faster but you probably will not notice the difference.
It doesn't seem like you're doing anything that would require NTFS (security, compression, size).

It's good to have virtual mem on a seperate HD, so your windows doesn't have to access your HD for both your applications, files, and the virtual mem. Also, it may cause less fragmentation to have it on a different HD.

I have both the upgrade version of win2k and the regular version. Same thing except the upgrade asks for a previous version of windows.

Finally, win2k does come with a disk manager to take care of partitioning.

NTFS is overall stabler , but like the previous reply fat32 is slightly faster.
But for all the apps you listed there is not going to be any real diffrence. As for the dual processor 2k supports it, not as good as some linuxes and others, but 98 doesnt at all. The good thing about fat32 with win2000 is it is very easy to read and write from you linux partian. You can listen to all your mp3's and even add some, but ntfs is a little more picky, and it is harder to get linux to read from it and very hard to write from it. But dont take my word for the linux stuff to the heart, i have only been running it for a short time, and don't know the exacts about it.

thanks guys, I think I'm just going to keep everything at FAT32, 98SE and Linux both read it quite easily (I have those now) and I presume Win2000 should easily house FAT32. That way I can easily share stuff between the OSes.

Interesting idea on the different hard drive for Vmem
Right now I have a 9gig 7200rpm and i'm going to pick up a big like 40-45 gig around the time I get Win2k so maybe I'll use the small on for Vmem. Thanks for the tip.
