I'll be building a new system this fall.. stupid question 1: My old computer is running win 98SE (fat32) the new system will be running XP. How can I convert my FAT files to NTFS?? I have many Gigs of files (6-9) that I'd like to run on the new system.. I'm comfortable running 98SE but know NOTHING about XP. help..... TIA

You can convert FAT to NTFS by running convert d: /fs:ntfs from a command line (assuming drive D: is the drive you want to convert.)

You cannot convert NTFS to FAT.

Just FYI, you don't have to convert from fat32 to ntfs in order to install windows xp. You can just upgrade from win98se to windows xp if you're concerned about losing your data. Ideally, you want more than one partition on a hard drive to seperate data from OS so that you can install whatever the OS instead of upgrading it (fresh installation is preferred over upgrading).

A fresh install is definately preferred. If not, leave it at fat32 for the time being and once you are comfy you should convert to NTFS. NTFS is much more resistent to damage since it journals the mft and such.
