I'm trying to resize my Windows XP ntfs partition so I can try to install linux. What program can I use to do this? Partition Magic 6says:

"<FONT face=Tahoma>If the option to expand or shrink is used on an NTFS partition, the system might enter an endless loop. After reporting a 100 percent completion of the resizing, Partition Magic might display the following errors:
Error 983. Too many errors found, process halted.
Error 1527: Bad update sequence number.
The application will then prompt the user to 'hit any key to reboot.' After the reboot, Partition Magic attempts to resize the partition again with the same results. "
</FONT>

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I've used PQMagic to resize NTFS partitions before (never XP though, which I hear has yet another extension to NTFS) and it's worked fine, I've only run the program from DOS though I wouldn't trust running it from inside Windows.

Belive it or not, the help is just that, helpful!
WOW
In the windows help index is ntfs, one of the topics is how to resize.
No need for any 3rd party stuff

hmm, I don't see it....

I have Corp 2600 build.

I don't see it in the help anywhere. I've checked in admin tools, computer management, local disks, but there is no option to shrink ntfs. There is an option to extend but not shrink.

PM6 doesn't work. In dos the resize options are grayed out. And in windows it gives me that warning message when I try to install. Are there any other programs that can perform this task?

in help, search for extend, as in extend partiton. open up the result "extend a basic volume and follow the instructions.

guess you missed the part where he says he wants to shrink not extend? And using Dynamic Disks to extend volumes is a bad idea because it wipes your partition table and puts on a GUID partiton table which nothing else can read yet.
