I am using VoptXP as my defrag program on XP Pro and the NTFS file system. It has the following option regarding loose or tight packing:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Tight packing - removing empty spaces between most files - reduces day to day fragmentation on FAT32 drives.

Loose packing - leaving some small spaces - reduces daily fragmentation on NTFS drives, and is the default.

Checked NTFS drives will be packed tight (Win XP only)
[ ] C: I can check here to have it tight pack my NTFS drive
-----------------------------------------------------------

So I have the option when it defrags my NTFS main drive of doing it loose OR tight on XP. Loose is the default but which is better for speed, stability?

Chances are you're not to notice any speed difference either way, file fragmentation has very little effect on overall performance.
