hi!
well i have my external USB hard drive, which is actually a normal hard drive connected to an USB to IDE converter, with a mini PSU. I use it in my windows XP PRO based PC, so it is formated with NTFS.
Over the months since i've had it, i've been playing with the permission (right click, properties, security, etc). Now i don't know what i've done with it, but i can't open any folders, and even the majority of files (some in the root can be accesed, but they are the only ones) give me "Access Denied".
Do i have to repair permissions? if so, how?
I really need to access the contents of my drive, because its got my work, music, and my downloads.
i have so far tried the folowing things:
1.
http://support.microsoft.com/d...x?scid=kb;en-us;266118
i get to item 8 and Import Template is greyed out... (on the 2k machine i am using at the moment, will have my XP machine in 3 days)
2.
*Go to My Computer
*Right click the drive letter for your eexternal USB drive and select "properties"
*In the window that appears, select "security"
*Make sure there is a checkbox so that "everyone" has "full control"
*Click the advanced button
*Place a check in the box to "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects"
*Click OK
3.
What I find works many times is to go into the Security and look for the Ownership tab. In XP it's under the advanced settings. Anyway, what you want to do for the drive is to force it to take Ownership of all the files and directories. There should be a box to replace owner on the subcontiners and objects. Once you take ownership of the files and directories, go back into the permissions and give whatever permissions, Administors, everyone, etc., to the drive and let it reset all the permissions on all files and folders. Once completed, you should be able to see and access all your files.
this i what i got using the above tips:
An error occured attempting to read directory:
d:/some directory
Access is denied
Continue Cancel
and
An error occured applying security information to:
d:/some directory
Access is denied
Continue Cancel
thanx a lot guys (and gals!)
