I have 3 pc's on my home network.

All are running winxp pro & fat32.

Any forseeable problems copying/sharing files between NTFS & FAT32 pcs?

I formating one pc now and im considering changing it to NTFS.

I do alot of work on pcs for friends also, i usually just hook their pcs up to my network, to copy files, get windows updates etc.. while im setting them up.

Some friends have WinXP, some have WinMe, all have FAT32.
Any forseeable problems doing this with one of my pcs using NTFS?
What about if i end up converting all pcs on my network to NTFS & i hook up a friends Winxp/winMe fat32 pc?

Basically, sharing files on my network & hooking friends pcs to my network is whats kept me from converting all my pcs to NTFS.

Also, if I burn CDRW / CDR's on a NTFS system & give them to friends using fat32, will there be ANY possible problems?

You share data and not file systems.

You could have any of the hundreds of viable file systems on your shares, and it don't mean squat to the computer getting the data. All the clients see is data.

sechs is pretty much on point.

TCP/IP came about as a method of communication between computers at a differnt and more standardized layer than what is considered the Application Layer.

Once the information is organized and pushed out onto ethernet as IP packets it will be reassembled and restructured for whatever enviroment it pops out at.

So the answer to your question is that you shouldn't worry about communication between PCs if it is over a network.

Now if you bring a disk between the system then you will need to make sure it is in a File System format that the destination machine can read.

Most systems create FAT16 File System on Floppy disk and CDFS on CDs but if you have removable HDD or other forms of Removable media make sure the destination system can read it or you will have a problem.

There are several wonderful FAQs on this topic and more! Please refer to the FAQ link in my sig and peruse until your brain hurts. And just a noste, I have not had problems sharing files between FFS, HFS+, NTFS, FAT32, ext2fs, or XFS at various times on my network, using a variety of transfer protocols.

I don't think it was addressed, but I'm sure you know you will able to read from NTFS to FAT32, but not the other way around.

I have something else to adress, you dont have a clue what you are talking about do you?

The filesystem in use has absollutely ZERO effect on whether files can be shared. The operating system takes care of all of that thanks to the wonders of smb. When the files are on the same systeam, and that system has NTFS and FAT32 partitions, it makes no difference. The OS takes care of all of that.

READ THE FAQs! :)

If I misunderstood your statement, let me apologize. But the way it is currently written just gives me the "I have no clue" impression.
