using tcp/ip, ip addresses 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on both machines, 10/100 switch and 10/100 NICs. Problem is i cannot see one machine from the other in network neighborhood. They show up when i use netbui.

Create a "hosts" file. Open hosts.sam (in c:\windows directory) in Notepad - will tell you how to add entries. Copy it to hosts (no extension), open in Notepad, add the entries for your LAN computers, and save in c:\windows.

You may also need to go into the properties of Network Neighborhood, drill down on File and Print Sharing, go to the second tab and there is a setting there that refers to maintaining a browse list or something of that nature. (Sorry, no 98 boxes around to check it on.) Change the setting from "Auto" to "True", "Yes", or "Always", etc., whatever is appropriate.

I've found that this helps sometimes.
