NT4 and MS Word 97 - problems opening file directly

I'm running NT4 and Office 97/Word 97 SR2.

When I try to open a .doc file directly (just by double clicking it) it takes me into word, but doesn't open the .doc. I get an error
"Word cannot open the document." However, if I actually open word first, and then open the doc from it, it opens just fine.

It isn't an end of th world problem as the .docs aren't lost, but it makes it a little awkward to view docs from emails as I just can't click on the attachments. As well, it wastes a bit of time.

Any idea what is wrong?

Are you running an AntiVirus program?

It may have the Macro virus protection enabled,
which will not allow you to directly open Doc files that
contain Macros.

No, I don't have any virus programs running in the background.

Any other ideas?

Have you checked Microsoft's knowledgebase? It sounds like it could be a messed up registry key. I had a similiar problem with .jpg files and an image viewer program. Turned out to be a registry key.
