NT4.0 and Boot.ini (no problem but this is weird)

I always learned that you couldn't boot nt 4 without nldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini.

Guess what? Without a boot.ini my workstation boots as normal, no choice of vga mode (off course) but no problem whatsoever. IT SHOULD NOT WORK!
