NT users...I need help

My father called me from work and said his NT machine is acting up. When he booted up this morning, all his desktop icons had large bold text and they didnt when he shut down yesterday. He said windows explorer text is all messed up as well. Somethings that he read normally everyday are now coming in like hirogliphics(SP?) ANy idea what may cause this. Sounds like a virus, but he is on a network and nothing popped up. Hes runnin a virus scan and so far nothing. Any ideas?

one of the things that i can think of is the local settings was changed or something
some things to try:

go to display properties, click on appearance, and select normal window scheme (or edit different fields as necessary). that should (hopefully) take care of the desktop icons problem... not sure if it will fix windows explorer, though ....

what about other programs, like msie or notepad? do they display hyrogliphics (or however that thing is spelled) as well?
