Actually New Technology was a name given to the project that developmed an advanced networking windows. So built on NT Technolgy is correct. Built on the New Technolgy projects technology.

Officially, the NT in Windows NT does not stand for anything.

The VMS++ theory is interesting and quite possibly true.

The background on the VMS++, is that Microsoft hired a group of the original VMS developers to help with Windows NT. The entire (in)security model of NT is based on VMS. Hey, even DOS was based on VMS (commands like dir(ectory), copy and delete; directory structure; file extensions; etc. They just changed the syntax.)

What Built on New Technology?

I heard that the best compliment is, "if you can?t innovate replicate."

I have heard M$ yes armies raved about NT4 and how much better it is vs NetWare. Then the paper MCSE praised Win2000 for how advance it is vs the 10 years old legacy NetWare, but low and behold Win2000 look, feel and features that have been implemented in NetWare since the begin of the last decade.

If you read the book Showstopper(s) which is about the development of Windows NT and contains first hand accounts from many of the major players in its development, it referred to NT as new technology, though officially it may not really stand for anything.
