I'm interested in managing the security settings and pushing software installations to a small set of Win2K desktops. Is this what NT Domain's are for? Can anyone show me some good articles/references on how to use them?

An NT domain can manage security on all machines in the domain, but to a limited extent compared to Active Directory. Also, NT cannot push out software without a 3rd party package.

Active directory offers package deployment and the ability to set a myriad of security settings based on membership in organzational units. This is all done through group policies which are much more configurable than NT's poledit ever was.

drat. last time I looked into active directory it looked like way to much effort for my simple 9 PC's
Plus, I have no control over DNS and i think AD wanted that.

You have control over DNS because you will need to set up your own to run Active Directory. It doesnt need to be a public DNS, it can be private only.

In a word, yes

Then again, it depends on what you need to do with those 9 machines, and if you are the type who likes to set up complex things just to learn them :)
