NT 4/SBS 4.5 Modem Issues

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good data/fax modem for use with my NT 4/SBS 4.5 system.

I hear that SBS 4.5 can be, well, picky about the hardware used with it. Someone, for example, told me not to use a PCI modem because of conflicts with the Hardware Abstraction Layer. I don't have any problem using an external serial modem; I just want to make sure I get a decent one.
