I've been installing a customers copy of NT 4 Workstation on their new Scsi System.
I've come to the point to install the Service Packs.
Every time I install one, I get coruption, and it won't boot without an error.
It says "ntos_kernel.exe corrupt, can not boot winnt<root>"

Their Install disk allready has SP1 on it.

Is there a certain way to install a SP?
Do I need to get them all, and do them in order? (even that caused an error)

I D/Ld them all, put them in their own folder on a differant partition, expanded the SP2, clicked upgrade.
NOT got an error on reboot.

I've put the i386 folder on the HDD, and tried loading it from there, along with the SPs.
But, I'm just not having any luck.

I tried to tell them that W2K Pro would probably be better, but they weren't sure if W2K would support what they do.
Some kind of Image software, and an App that runs some huge microfilm type printer.

I've never really messed with NT, untill W2K, and I started running dualies with Rc5.
Then only on a couple of machines, I'm into the Open Source Movement. Linux and FreeBSD ;)

Thanks in advance.

I am definately NOT an expert on NT, or any other OS for that matter, but I'd try this.

1. Install NT.

2. Install Service Pack 6a.

What happens when you do that?

Service Packs are cumulative, meaning that they contain everything the old SPs had. You should be able to go directly to 6a.

What kinda' SCSI card is in the system? how big is the harddrive? i would partition the drive with a 2gig fat16 for NT and the boot loader. If you have a newer SCSI card you have to hit the F6 key when NT starts to load up drivers for installation. when you are done installing NT install Service Pack 6a. A ntos_kernel.exe error means that either your BOOT.INI has an incorrect entry or your file system is corrupt. i would do a wipe of your drive (write zeros to the entire drive), when NT4 starts its installation press F6 and have your SCSI drivers ready (dont install video drivers or sound drivers until after you installed SP6) and then let NT format the first two gigs of your harddrive. install SP6 when done with installation.
