I just told my boss I am an expert at NT 4.0, been using it for all of 30 minutes now...just installed it. I am proficient at troubleshooting Win95,98 been building systems for several years now. He is giving me the responsibility of troubleshooting and maintaining an NT workstation application at work.

I am looking for some good websites on just that , troubleshooting, NT 4.0 capabilities, common error messages and how to deal with them, hardware installation, etc.

Any links sure would help me out guys.

Thanks,

You could allways sign up for the WinNT mailing list at www.swynk.com, if you need quick help and cant find it in the MSKB or some site, you can allways ask there.

Have your boss dish out the money for a TechNet subscription and a copy of the NT Resource Kit so you can maintain your so-called expertise.

These will be among your best friends along with various tech sites and the NTFaq site posted above.

While I applaud the idea that you want info on technical resources, I cringe at the idea that you suckered your boss into placing you into a position that you may not be qualified for. I just hope this is not a mission critical system or group of systems.

It is also not enough to simply be technically savvy... Having an understanding of good IT practices is also essential to being a good tech suppport person or a good systems admin. Unfortunately I know of no resource that offers good info on good IT practices. For me, that came with time and experience and learning from others.

When you are supporting this system or group of systems, remember to take a step back and think about whether or not there is a more practical way to do whatever you are doing at the moment. Always keep in mind the potential impact of a change to the system and what affect that will have not only on the system, but the users that rely on that system.

Thanks for the tip and links,

Heh,heh...dirtboy, may need some luck, but I am overdue.

Spiff, in the coporate world ya gotta take chances sometimes to survive. My boss is an idiot, and no one at the company knows more about computers than I do. I was not qualified for my job 20 years ago and now I am an international "expert" in electrophoresis.

Anyway, no networking is involved, just maintaining individual workstations, I think I will be able to handle it...appreciate the concern though.
