NT 4.0 RPC Service Problems

BadThad

Lifer
I have an NT 4.0 workstation that has the RPC service hosed. If i remove all networking components and NIC (not physically), the RPCSS.exe service will stop and start just fine. As soon as I add network services, i.e. TCP/IP, server, etc and reboot, the RPC service crashes at boot. It won't start either, if you try to force it you get a visit from Dr.Watson and an exception error. Interestingly, the RPC Locator service will stop/start just fine.

Any Clues?

I've tried reinstalling SP5 without networking, it installs fine with networking off. I also tried to install it after networking was installed. It gets through the install, then, at the very end, the stinking RPC service crashes...but the SP5 install does complete.

HELP!!
