I am quite fascinated by Comet Holmes and am racing with TAS and the TeAm in the King's Gauntlet Seti@Home race. My kids know what I am doing and I have shown the pics of the comet to my kids. They went all out to see the comet last night. The only really good hole in the cloud cover was just at the Perseus and with some really strong binoculars the fuzzy ball was clearly visible.
Of course the talk of the evening was the comet. aliens and Seti.

My youngest (11 years old below designated CF) then talked to one of his pals (FR) through MSN and the log registered the following conversation (translated from Swedish, all smilies deleted because most of then do not exist in this forum):

CF: My dad is looking for aliens with some 100 000 of his buddies.
FR: ??????
CF: Yeah, all the computers in the basement analyze signals from outer space.
FR: What?
CF: They are having a race of who finds the aliens first.
FR: Is he crazy? I don't want to meet aliens!!! Pull the plug on those computers! They will kill us all!
CF: No, they won't
FR: Yeah, they will! Survival of the fittest - and we are gone!
CF: I believe in humans. We will crush them if they try!
FR: CF - pull the plug! They may not come to Umeå
CF: Come on. You are nuts, they need many many years to come. The closest planet is some 20 light years away from here and no signals have been heard yet.
FR: I am getting out - I'll go with my parent to the farm! Bye!
CF: ????
FR: Yeah, they [aliens] are in this new comet in the sky, and that is why it has lighted up.They have started the braking rockets and are going to land on earth!

I told CF that the comet was just now moving away from the earth and that it had been close to the sun in May. He looked at me and said: "I am not afraid of aliens. We will find them before I die and then I will meet them". He then asked me if his computer was crunching. When I told him it was his short answer was: "Good".

Oh yeah: nqOT: not quite off topic ...

This is great haha, I bet this will create rumors about you having alien contact at your son's school :D

When my kids ask me I usually tell them that so far we have proven that intelligent life does not exist.
Statistically that's a correct statement, at this time.
That's the kind of thing that gets them thinking (hopefully).

I beg to differ;)
Actually we have only proved that aliens have not in the time & space period we have searched communicated via radio on that particular frequency :)

I said "so far" we have proven there's no "intelligent life".

So far, meaning in the short time we have been looking and "intelligent life" meaning anything at least smarter than us. ;)

I admit I'm narrow minded as to what constitutes "intelligent life" ;)

Intelligent life being at least as smart as us or hopefully smarter ... I hope very much "smarter", because equally or less smart would probably mean as (or more) destructive. But that is my hypothesis.

I agree especially with the last sentence considering what we are doing with ourselves and our environment. But that is really off topic and I do not want to start a discussion about global warming and other environmental issues.

Perhaps we should hope that we find intelligent life very soon so they may even help us to galvanize the energy needed to try change our more destructive behaviors. OTOH I fear that then the opposite would happen: more weapons, arms, defense projects ... and thus more environmental impact because then fear and/or greed would have a much more profound impact on our lives.

These are hard questions: how do we want to get eradicated: by our own behavior and environmental disasters or by the strongly armed and aggressive aliens? ;)

well, I don't want to get destroyed by amazon women...but if we needed an ambassador to their kingdom, sign me up!

peter, that's a great story! You should have your son go over to his buddy's house and secretly install seti on his computer for a few days. Have your son call him one night and confess his sins by saying that the aliens have tracked the signal back to his buddy's house and they're headed there right now!!!!!

See, the old seti classic taskbar icon(when it was transmitting) would of made things very believable at that point. :)
