NPR Special Debate on the limits of Freedom of Speech

When will people realize that "freedom of speech" only protects you from government prosecution.

It does NOT protect you from people thinking you are an idiot, people not liking you, and people shunning you for your ideas and thoughts. In other words, the social consequences of saying something unpopular, or downright ignorant.

So while the freedom of speech definitely includes the freedom to offend, do not be surprised if there are non-government social repercussions for your offensive speech.

Let's not forget that conservatives have been intolerant as well. Hell, any idealist/partisan is going to be intolerant of other people's ideals.

I've even seen some mighty intolerant atheists who, in their anti-religious extremism become the very thing they claim to despise.
