Dogs have historically been emergency food sources for various peoples in Siberia, Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland. Sled dogs are usually maintained for pulling sleds, but occasionally are eaten when no other food is available.
British explorer Ernest Shackleton and his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition became trapped, and ultimately killed their sled dogs for food. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen was known to have eaten sled dogs during his expedition to the South Pole. By eating some of the sled dogs, he required less human or dog food, thus lightening his load. When comparing sled dogs to ponies as draught animals he also notes:
"...there is the obvious advantage that dog can be fed on dog. One can reduce one's pack little by little, slaughtering the feebler ones and feeding the chosen with them. In this way they get fresh meat. Our dogs lived on dog's flesh and pemmican the whole way, and this enabled them to do splendid work. And if we ourselves wanted a piece of fresh meat we could cut off a delicate little fillet; it tasted to us as good as the best beef. The dogs do not object at all; as long as they get their share they do not mind what part of their comrade's carcass it comes from. All that was left after one of these canine meals was the teeth of the victim - and if it had been a really hard day, these also disappeared.

So would you do it?

If I was sledding with some random dog team and was trapped, sure. Would I eat my own pet? No.

Yes.

I once saw a billboard in Vegas for the vegetarian counsel or some bullshit. It had photos of some cute chickens and some little kittens and basically asked "Why eat one but not the other?"

Good point, vegetarians. I will add cats to my diet of chicken.

No way. My cat is one of my best friends. Wouldn't even be an option.

^^^

Any food I did have would be shared with the cats until it was gone. In fact, I'd give my cats the better food if it was more appropriate. Humans have more suitable options than cats do, so they'd get the meat products, and I'd eat beans.

It depends on what happens next. If killing and eating my dog could potentially save me and my family by extending our life by enough to be rescued from whatever predicament we are in, then yes I would probably do it. If killing and eating my dog was not going to ultimately help me survive, then no.

Anyone who answered no to this is so out of touch with reality it makes me sick. If you are starving, you will eat ANYTHING.

In a heartbeat. Survival instincts take over eventually. Look at the cases where people had to resort to cannibalism. The real thought process would probably be more along the lines of "would I eat a dog or human now? Hell no. Would I eat one if I had no other choice to survive? Well..."

Sure I would. But probably a better idea to use your dog to find/get food instead of eating him.

This. Big difference between some random sled dog and your own pet.
