**NOW WITH PIX** Does anyone know anything about fire extinguishers?

is this for a house? There are different types depending on your situation...chemical ones, CO2, foam. Although I don't know which type to use when in every situation, you could always check with the fire department/marshall and see what they say.

There is local companies or factories that make/sell the extinguishers. Have you looked in the Yellow Pages or on Google?

Yes, for a home you'll want one that is an ABC. The main place you'll use is in the kitchen. You will need a 2 1/2 or a 5 pounder, depending on avaliable space to place it. That's because of grease and electrical fires. Electrical? Yes. Go into most kitchens and you will find one or two plugs that have everything plugged into them. As for the rest of the house I would give them smoke detectors. Very thoughtful.

Call your local fire department. They'll be happy to help you out. Firefighters are a friendly, dedicated bunch. Heck, they said I can come over and play pool. The National Guard didn't do that.

Jerks....

Just remind everyone to tip them upside dowb a couple a times.About once a month.
This stops everything from settling into a solid chunk in the bottom.
The fellow here in town that refills them told me this.

I trust him,it's my life on the line.

I go to use one once when a trash can caught on fire (burning against the building with an overhang). It was either that or a bucket of water, and I didn't want to explain the the district manager that the hotel burned down because I was too stingy to use a fire extinguisher.

When I think of fire extinguishers, I think of Kidde. I'd probably buy them at a hardware store or at Wal-Mart.

I know Halon is pretty good, but also mostly unused nowadays.

I don't think Halon is something you shoot out of a handheld extinguisher. It's normally deployed through some built-in system. It takes the oxygen out of the air and it can kill you.

(Edited to say I ran my mouth and then did my research. Apparently Halon can be deployed from a handheld extinguisher. Production of Halon ceased January 1, 1994 because it contains CFC. Anything you get now is recycled Halon.

Awful thoughtful gift idea, though. Never would have thought of that.)

I know that if you pick one up by the handle at work, and someone removed the pin which secures the trigger in place, you're in for a big surprise, especially if you're not fully awake.
