I don't do much gaming anymore. I just use my pc for using the internet mostly. Is it better for me to use WinXP or Redhat linux? I have copies of both.

If you have no intention to game, get red hat. It's much snappier and doesn't get loaded down with spyware and the such.

If you're talking free releases, though, Fedora Core 4 is the much newer version of red hat.

Start here

Go through a mirror if they don't have a direct link to "FC4-i386-DVD.iso"

The sha1sum is a checksum to see if the image is correct. You should be able to get one from the location you pull down the DVD iso.

I see no reason to go with linux... I don't find it snappier and you are just making sure that you won't be able to easily play games if you wanted to. You can't even figure out which CDs to download, yet you have your Windows XP cd ready to go...

I would definitely go linux since you do not plan to do any gaming. I never liked any Red Hat-like distributions though. I suggest Ubuntu.

With the CD or DVD you need to burn the images to cd/dvd respectively first. The CD 1 and DVD both should be bootable and automatically launch the installer, when you have your BIOS set to boot from the CD first.

Maybe he wants to program under a different OS, besides, the computer software world is starting to shift to Fedora as more of it's capabilities become unleashed by the least likely person who just wanted to test Fedora out.

I got nothing for that.

However, I would recommend Gentoo if you are comfortable with Linux (it compiles the kernal specifically for your machine) or SuSE for a basic Linux install. The SuSE iguana is just too awesome.

If you can't download a file and then write it to a CD, then don't ever ever touch Linux.

Look, click here:
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V3.9-2005-05-27-EN.iso

Download that file. Open your CD burning software (Nero, EasyCD Creator etc) and find the "Burn Image" option (in Nero, it's Recorder menu -> Burn Image), select the file you downloaded and Burn it.

Put the disc in the drive, restart the computer. It won't install anything, it won't wipe anything, and it runs entirely from the CD - this will give you an idea of what Linux is like.

Lol, ok just download a real FTP client and put in the URL of the CD/DVD image. Right click the link and paste it in the URL location. It should log into FTP server and pull the download. Windows has a fairly craptastic default download system.

You can also just buy the CD/DVDs for a few bucks plus shipping on the internet.

This stuff is why Bittorrent was developed.

It was developed specificly to move large files at high rates over slow networks (the internet). Of course it got used by warez people, but that's only because it's good at what it does...

Torrents for Fedora Core 4 are aviable here:
http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/

If your using a Intel or AMD 32bit machine you want to download either the ISO binary cdroms OR the DVD image.

If your using a Intel machine or AMD machine that has 64bit support you can either download the same files as above for just 32bit software, or if you want to go for a full 64bit OS you can download the iso "binary" images or DVD image for x86_64.

Most distros have torrents aviable for their installs. Makes things go a lot quicker.

Depends on how your stuff is setup.

Do you connect directly to your cable modem or something? Does your ISP require you to have a certain name or something like that?

I have no clue what is going on on your paticular case.

Personally I have a simple home-style router connected to my cable modem then I connect to that using a ethernet wire.
