Toddler Found Safe in Bear's Den After 3 Days

Updated: Tue, Oct 02 11:00 AM EDT

TEHRAN (Reuters) - A mother bear appears to have cared for a missing 16-month-old Iranian toddler who was found safe and sound three days later in the animal's den, the Kayhan newspaper said Tuesday.

The child's parents, from a nomadic tribe in western Lorestan province, returned to their tent after working in the fields to find him missing, Kayhan said.

Three days later, a search party found the baby, who they said had probably been breast fed by a mother bear, in a den some six miles away from the nomadic settlement. A medical examination showed the baby was in good health, the daily said.

I remember reading a newspaper article a while back about a gorilla (maybe a chimp, I don't remember) who grabbed a small boy who had fallen into the pen & was knocked unconscious by the impact. I believe it was the San Diego zoo.

She grabbed him, held him in her arm much like a human would hold a baby, & kept the other primates at bay while backing to the keeper's access door where she stayed until her keepers came & got the child.

Impressive, to say the least.

Um, no. That story has sure been exaggerated! LOL.

The boy fell in and was knocked unconscious. The large A-male gorrilia kept the younger more boisterous gorrilia's at bay for a while until the boy could be lifted out of the pen. The male would chase off the other males, and a time or two he lightly stroked the boy's head, but he never picked him up. The male did start to get a bit nervous when the little boy woke up a started to cry.

I'm pretty sure I also saw video footage of it, I know for sure I saw pictures (a scan of the newspaper article). I'm looking for info, but I'm not having very good luck.

But I could be wrong.

You know, I might be thinking of a different situation. But how many kids fall into gorillia pits?

OK, here's your story. I did see a different one:

From 1996
Boy falls into primate exhibit, rescued by gorilla
BROOKFIELD, Illinois (AP) -- Zoo keepers hailed a 150-pound female gorilla as a hero, after she rescued a 3-year-old boy who fell into a primate exhibit at the Brookfield Zoo.

The boy, whose name was not released, fell 18 feet Friday onto concrete in an area with seven gorillas and suffered critical head injuries, authorities said.

While zoo-goers screamed in horror, Binti Jua -- an 8-year- old gorilla carrying an infant on her back -- picked up the boy and placed him near a door where zoo keepers could retrieve him, zoo spokeswoman Sondra Katzen said.

The boy initially was considered critical, but "his condition has improved, which is good news," said Mike Maggio, a spokesman for Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

How the hell did you find that?

I looked & looked.

[EDIT]With the proper city I found info easily, I guess I was just screwed by my inaccurate memory of it being in San Diego. Here's a link. And another[/EDIT]

OK, I found my story too.

My story took place in 1986 in NJ. There are no webposted news stories about it (there was no web news in 1986), but here's a website set up in honor of the alpha male gorillia "Jambo" who saved the little boy:

Jambo

See? There are two stories :)

Hehehe, the FIRST lesson you learn in web searching is to not enter too much info first, unless you need to narrow it down.

I found it in under a minute by simply entering +"boy falls" +gorillia

I tried it without the city info as well, but I didn't use the term gorilla because I wasn't sure what she was.

Had I used that instead of "primate" my searches would have returned results just as quickly.
