Kellogg's in the UK seems to have started using a them for Corn Flakes in 2004link

Because marketing studies for the cereal companies showed that with rice krispies, cheerios, etc., their customers eat a bowl almost daily, finishing the box of cereal before it goes stale. On the other hand, while their customers enjoy the flavor of corn pops, they typically gag on the sweetness and only eat a bowl every 4 or 5 days to break up the monotony of cheerios for breakfast daily. Thus, without the easily resealable foil enclosure, the corn pops would go stale.
