I had an 85 Vanagon. I remember driving that thing to Maine one summer. It rolled great, but had terrible power. The one I had was an automatic/water cooled....full sized van being powered by a 4 cylinder.
The air conditioner at full blast in the summer would barely make it worth sliding the windows shut.
On the Interstate, I took it over a few mountains with the pedal to the floor. (takes that to climb at Interstate speeds). Going down the mountains I got it up to 90mph....it was bad. The wind slammed into the side of the van and it felt like I could have wrecked any second. Enough air gets under the van that it has additional airflow issues that can cause extra instability at higher speeds...
