I had an 85 Vanagon. I remember driving that thing to Maine one summer. It rolled great, but had terrible power. The one I had was an automatic/water cooled....full sized van being powered by a 4 cylinder.

The air conditioner at full blast in the summer would barely make it worth sliding the windows shut.

On the Interstate, I took it over a few mountains with the pedal to the floor. (takes that to climb at Interstate speeds). Going down the mountains I got it up to 90mph....it was bad. The wind slammed into the side of the van and it felt like I could have wrecked any second. Enough air gets under the van that it has additional airflow issues that can cause extra instability at higher speeds...

My childhood is packed full of trips in our Westfalia and being in fun towns eating at greasy spoons while our van is in a local automotive shop getting something worked on.

My parents were so happy to get rid of that thing and replaced it with the better engine designed Eurovan Westfalia.
