The Office of Naval Research will award $7.5 million in grant money over five years to university researchers from Tufts, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Brown, Yale and Georgetown to explore how to build a sense of right and wrong and moral consequence into autonomous robotic systems.

"Holy shit that is so mindblowing..." said people 72 years ago after reading Asimov. Thinking machines need guiding principles or they're no better than a calculator, it's not rocket surgery.

And I, for one, would welcome our robot overlords if it means an end to these threads.

Heh...am I being too skeptical in thinking that the military drives these kind of technologies and so accepting that, feel that no matter what they put on the surface, there will be code buried for special political needs? You know....ala Robocop hidden directive? Who's going to know?
