Now THAT'S discipline! Student punished in Japan

TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) -- A Japanese teenager was forced by his teacher to write an apology in blood after dozing in the classroom, the school's principal said on Monday.

The teacher later went to high school principal Hiroaki Dan and confessed what he had done, Dan told Reuters.

The teacher had apologized to the 17-year-old boy and his parents, Dan said, confirming a local media report of the incident, which happened last Thursday.

He said the boy was taken to the staff room of the school in Fukuoka City, southern Japan, after being caught asleep during a lesson. The 40-year-old male teacher handed the boy a box-cutter and paper and told him to write an apology in blood.

The teacher left the student, who then cut his finger and began to write an apology using his own blood.

Other teachers in the staff room did not notice what was happening, Dan said.

"To ask a student to write in their own blood is something I just can't imagine," he said.

He said the boy was back in school, and neither he nor his parents had asked to switch teachers. The teacher involved is expected to resume classes in a few days, Dan said.

The incident comes on the heels of an attack in which an 11-year-old girl killed a classmate by slashing her throat with a box cutter, also in southern Japan.

Someone should propose naptime for school . . .

Wow, I wonder why the Jap kids are a lot more focused on their school work than the US kids!

do you honestly believe that this supports the stupid notion that the japanese school system is better than american school systems?

NO WAY. just the opposite.

it's not the SCHOOL systems in america that's the problem, it's the parents.

one interesting thing to note here in NJ is, whenever the Indians decide to move to an area, the "ratings" of that school systems improve. why do you think that is? is it because the schools all of a sudden got better?? NO, it's because the student / parent participation in the educational system has increased.

it's pretty much true or most areas where you see an influx of asians, the overall grades improve. hmmm, wonder why.

hmm. never thought of it that way. i guess it makes sense...cuz if that (original story) happened here in US, parents would be crying for the school to fire the teacher...and then sue the school. but in japan, the teacher kept his job

Way to play off a stereotype. The reason is that Asians are, per capita, the wealthiest minority in this country - and guess what? Schools are funded by property taxes - when Asians move into a particular neighborhood their money comes with them, and invested in the local economy land prices rise and in turn, so do property taxes. With higher taxes comes better-funded schools, etc.

The reason why Japanese schools in addition to Chinese and Korean schools can churn out so many students who score well on standardized tests are because they sacrifice creativity and spontaneity at the price of automatons who do nothing but study, study, study. It has come under fire from critics in the past few years and has begun to reform. In that respect, the US school system is ahead by leaps and bounds.

which only goes to further my point.

i left S Korea and came to the US SPECIFICALLY for my kids educations sake. i prefer the educational system here in the US vs that which they have in Asia.

btw, look at the scores, predominantly asian neighborhoods have higher scores than neighborhoods that are not predominantly asian. and it's not just because of the money, it has more to do with the parents and values the parents instill in the children than the money.

my point being, we in america have to stop blaming the system and take responsibility for our own kids. the opportunities for students in the US is greater than the opportunities ANYWHERE else in the world.

All that creativity and spontaneity, and we have ebonics to show for it. Brilliant.

don't confuse creativity and spontaneity with lack of basics.

creativity and spontaneity can only be productive with solid basics on which to base that creativity.

It's a little more complicated than that. The whole system in Japan is very different. Your test scores in junior high dictate your entire future. Those who score in the lower half automatically get routed to a vocational high school, to learn a trade. Score well in that lower half and something promising such as IT training might come your way. Score in the lowest tier and gardening may be all you can achieve. Those scoring in the top half get sent to academic high schools, but even so, all those high schools are rated. You get placed accordingly. Then once you get through that hell, you take extra classes to start preparing for exams into college. Although once you do get into college, it's cake compared to US colleges.

You can bet parental support is there from the elementary school level, as every parent wants their young kid to succeed before it's too late. Japan's educational system is almost scary, as your entire future is determined by your junior high test scores.

actually, i'm very aware of how the system is in Japan as it's VERY VERY similar to what you find in S Korea.

what doesn't change is, it's not the system of Education that is the reason for lower overall scores by US students as compared to Japanese/Korean students in their respective countries.

the difference is how involved the parents are in the childrens education.

your point about college is very important. in Korea, very few get into college, but once you do, EVERYONE graduates. it takes almost NO effort to graduate from college in korea. in america almost anyone can get INTO a college, but only those that deserve it graduate. big difference. which type of graduate would you rather hire?
