Now that we're discussing nukes, what do EMP's do?

Do they destroy electronics that are on or if they're off do they survive? Does it depend on the nature of the electronics? Will my car work but not my PC's?
What is the radius of the EMP when a nuke is detonated?
Maybe someone that browses these forums is educated on this.

Research EMP Shockwave - 200 200
Cost: 100
The Science Vessel can fire an EMP missile. This missile has a fairly short range an affects an area. Upon impact, the shields of any units (Protoss) are dispersed bringing them to 0. The energy of any unit caught within the EMP blast is also set to 0.
This ability is primarily an anti-Protoss weapon. It is most effective against Archons. Archons have 350 shields but only 10 hit points. When EMP is used on Archons, they are reduced to 10 hit point warriors. EMP can be used on Protoss buildings as well to make them easier to destroy. Key targets include Photon Cannons (Making them easier to destroy) as well as Shield Batteries (Canceling both its shields and energy) and Pylons powering key buildings. EMP works wonders on the Protoss armies reducing their power tremendously. A skilled Protoss player will run from the battle once hit with EMP to recharge at Shield Batteries rather than continuing on with the attack.

If you come across a tightly packed group of Magic users such as Battlecruisers, Templars, Wraiths, Ghosts, and so on you can use EMP to reset their energy slowing down their magic use.

from a very reputable source

You mean mana. ;)

C'mon Kiyup haven't you ever played Starcraft. Or watched Broken Arrow in fact..

Unshielded electronics no longer work after hit with an EMP ( electromagnetic pulse )

This may or may not be of any help ... but it may somewhat answer one of the questions ...

there was a show on discovery channel a while back about EMP and in one of the segments, some engineer was talking about how he wanted to develop am EMP device that the police could use to end chases ... so it would destroy the electronics in a car. I dont know about the on off bit .... common sense tells me that it would kill it either way .... but I dont know enough about it to be sure ... ... I suggest you post this in the H.T. Forum as the answers for this could be quite in depth

Technically, Energy. Mana is magic, like in WarCraft. Mana is Energy in SC.

This I knew. I was wondering what the radius for the EMP is when a nuke detonates. I'm thinking it's many times the area of the actual blast. Since I'm hoping I'm far away from any possible detonations, I'm wondering if my electronics will still get screwed up. Also taking into consideration I'm not downwind from the nuke and needing to worry about fallout.

Oh, should have thought of searching all forums thanks Evadman. BTW did you double-check your 45MPH bowling throw? ;)

Evadman may know more about this than me, but I believe back in the 60s there was a huge airburst (25 megatons or larger if I recall) by the Soviets. It took out all their satellites in that hemisphere.

Again, I cant link it, but I believe it to be true

IT will diable anything that uses magnetism and has the flow of electricity throught it except Old cars
they can run without that because the rely on raw electricity the rest is controlled by mechanical parts...
An old truck with a dead battery won't run but once started it can run for quite a while

No, I did not know that. I would assume it took some of ours with it though. We did testing on bikini (sp?) atol. Not too sure on the Soviets.

You can do a simple test to see how a palm, laptop computer, modem, etc. will fare in the event of attack with such apparatus. Place target device in microwave oven and start oven for four seconds. Remove target device from oven after beep and try using it. If it works, chances are it would survive a severe electromagnetic event.

Cheers!

It probably took out some of ours, but we would not have admitted it in those days, understandably
