For me:

1. Disappointing
2. No serious competitor to SLI yet

It makes me want to wait for the the next 7800 series (512 mb or increase in clocks)...

Very much different from previous generations where atleast as a whole, the ATI was faster. (X800 and 9800 series)

Disappointing

I was waiting for the r520... until the end of August. Now, by the time the x1800 XT is available itll be only a few more months til r580 and NV's 90nm part.

For me: Good thing ATI finally got their act in gear. It's underwhelming for sure, but it introduces SM 3.0 into ATI cards finally (we've had the lack of SM 3.0 compliance repeated ad nauseum here the last two years). It also brings back high quality AF, a big plus. It's not a great competitor to SLI but how many people actually run SLI with the top cards? Rollo is one, name 4 more here on Anandtech? I can't think of anyone else; if there are so few SLI customers here, then think of how many Joe Blows run SLI? It's an expensive, extremely niche option.

ATI is finally back in the game in terms of features and is caught up with the 7800 series, which was running away with the speed title. Heck, Nvidia couldn't catch the 9700 Pro/9800 Pro with two big steppings (NV30 and NV35), so ATI catching up to Nvidia in one step is alright.

Oh yeah, the X1800XL looks pretty decent (o/c potential seems good), and X1600 and below all look like total crap.

Now we have R580, G80 and R600 to look forward to. Bring it on!

Well since I bought on yesterday x1800xl I can give my opinion. Its not a bad upgrade from an x800xl. The biggest complaint I have is temperature. I idle at 86-90C! This is one hot momma, and I have seen other reports that are the same results. I can get 550 on the core and 530 on the mem before I run into problems. I am sure its heat holding me back. Image quality is good, but the temps are a letdown. A better cooler I am sure will help, but I havent deceided if I want to return it and get a GTX or GT SLI or even just a GT. I might return it and wait for the XT with the better cooler...

How about posting your opinions in one of the other numerous existing threads discussing these cards?

1. was expecting a nvidia like lauch since ati has so much time to prepare for it
2. Performance is only on par and a bit better than nvidia, expected more
3. hope ati optimizes drivers good in the following months, nvidia is ahead as much as i hate to admit it (dual core, sli with 2 different vendors.)

I'm still waiting on the X1800XL OC results . . . but I'm definitely about 80% ready to get a 7800GT . . .

You should be like 99.999% sure. I jumped on the 7800GT with no hesitation back in August--even as an ATI fanboi.

Was overall disappointed by the 7800GTX (no nVidia fanboy attacks please). It didn't seem to provide the performance boost over the X800 that I was already sporting. Now, we knew the R520 was coming so I waited to see which would be better. Then I heard about the AVIVO features from ATI and that really intrigued me. At release the X1800 seems like a decent card and is certainly competitive with the 7800GTX but overall I'm not that impressed. It's in the same boat for me as the latest from nVidia, not enough of a jump in performance and features over the X800.

At this point, I'm just going to wait for early 2006 and see what type of video cards get announced then. I'll go on a limb and say the G72 and the R580 will be released within a month of each other. nVidia is transitioning to a 90nm process but it's mostly a die shrink from what's released so far and ATI has worked out some kinks in the 90nm process already so neither company should have major roadblocks ahead. Hopefully ATI adds a more fleshed out AVIVO feature set and nVidia adds similar features in it's G72. HD video decoding is a must but for some, like me, who have the occasional project requiring video encoding, HD video encoding will definitely need to be included in their next video card.
