Now that the HD-DVD player is only $49.99

For 50 bucks, and five titles, I see little downside to this deal. I already have a PS3 and a lot of BD titles but if Transformers, and the Bourne series are part of that 5 free movies deal, why not get it as an extra drive?

Is the add-on drive a plug and play drive when attached to a PC?

I bought the 360 HD-DVD Player and returned it today too. I bought it thinking that it would upconvert standard DVDs through component. I was wrong you have to have HDMI or VGA to do that. To buy the VGA for my xbox360 would be too much of an investment for a dead tech to me. Just before I returned it, I messed with settings on my new tv (I got the Samsung LN-T4061F last Friday), I was able to adjust the settings and it seems that the TV does upscaling automatically making having to spend that extra cash even less appealing. Hopefully, the price for blu-ray or ps3 will come down soon...

Where is it $50?

Believe Cosco has the A3 for 49.99

I may pickup an A30 from Amazon for 112 bucks.

The model they carry is called the D3 & includes an HDMI cable in the box (otherwise its identical to the A3) however to the best of my knowledge its still selling for about $80.

For $50 I'd buy a second unit to keep as a backup though ... going to stop by there this afternoon & check it out.

The Xbox 360 addon is $49.99

yeah...this confused me at first, and once I figured out that's what he was referring to (it was on daily tech a day or so ago), I changed my post.

but being that it's largely regarded as the worst HD DVD player out there, why not get a far superior player for only 30 bucks more?

EDIT: to add to that, those movies (Transformers and Bourne series) are not part of that deal. the pool of free movies that you have to choose from are 80% crap (same as the Blu Ray side). The A3, however, comes packaged with Bourne Identity and 300, and on top of that you get the same 5 free movie deal...and a much better player.

I bought the HD player today from FYE for $15 after rebate. $50 + 10% off(backstage pass) - $30 rebate. technically it comes with 6 movies if you include King Kong, which is packaged with it.

I figure for $15 I really can't go wrong. will I really notice a difference in quality between this and the A3?? if so I'll wait till the A3 hits $50 and jump

Wow, I'll have to checkout FYE for that deal. I'm assuming that is the 360 addon, daveymark. I wouldn't mind getting a backup unit. While it's not the best player out there, I doubt the A3 is much better. While it doesn't support any of the newer audio formats, for those who are stuck with old receivers it doesn't matter too much. I heard some of the Toshiba players are pretty slow booting up, loading movies, and menu response. Some article indicated wait time as high as 50 secs. Exaggerated? I don't know, but the 360 addon is very responsive, comparable to DVD players.

Whats the point? I mean really, even if it was free, what is on HD-DVD that is a "MUST HAVE"? Whats coming "soon" that is a must have? If the Godfather or something as epic was in HD-DVD then I would definately get a 50 buck player and good HD-DVD movies, but there is nothing worthy on HD-DVD to make me want one even at such a cheap price as nothing epic will ever be released on that format. You would just end up with more HW that will get jammed in your closet, next to the old NES and 3DO. 🙂

^^^

I have plenty of movies already (40+) that I will not be replacing with Blu-Ray. The point is if my current player dies (not uncommon for electronic devices sometimes do), I would have a backup unit since all HD DVD players are/will be discontinued.

For those who don't even own HDM and want to experience it now, going purple may not be such a bad idea. Given a choice of owning a player + 5 movies versus owning a player + 35 movies at the same price I'd rather choose the latter. Blu-Ray is the future but HD DVD is the present.
