I'm looking to go to a dual DVI vidcard. I was waiting for the 8600GT to come out and I noticed that for about the same price I can get a 7900GS now. Is this a good route to go?

8500gt for 99 bucks has duel dvi at zipzoomfly. Read the review on Anandtech it supposed to take 100% of the load off the cpu for HD video. Not sure if you wanted it for gaming though? The 8600gt has the same duel dvi features and also take all the load off the cpu when playing HD video. So yes it's worth it.

I haven't seen an 8500 w/ two DVI ports. They all have a dual link DVI port, but not two DVI ports.

You are right they won't have duel dvi for the 8500gt. The 8600gt will and has the new purevideo technology for HD playback. I'd still get it over a 7900gs if your not a big gamer.

Have you seen AT's benches? Doesn't do so well against a 7900GS when AA comes into play.

Only edges out a 7900GS in Battlefield 2, but ONLY when AA is off. When it's on, the 7900GS walks away.

Gotta give Oblivion to the 8600GTS hands down.

7900GS faster in PREY. With or without AA. Turning on AA just gives the 7900GS a bigger lead.

And the GTS is ahead of the 7900GS in Rainbow Six a good bit. But, as per usual, AT's article is inconsistent.

No AA usage in Oblivion or Rainbow Six. Why not? Do they not support AA?????????

Annoying.

On a brighter note, the Pure Video looks like a very nice improvement.

Considering you can get recert 7800GS/GT, X1950Pro, and other cards of the like for $120-$150, the 8600 series doesn't make sense at launch prices, but might be more compelling if it drops to $129 or so.

If used is OK, 6600GTs are all dual DVI IIRC, and 7600GTs should also be.

EDIT: It all depends on what you're doing with the card. If you're not gaming or watching HD video with a weak CPU then an 8600 is probably a waste.

Either one is never significantly faster... but:

8600gt has DX10, HD purevideo, room for driver improvements, and IRC (as with 8xxx series) much improved picture quality.
