What good brands are out there? NEC was the best for price and reliability and performance, but they are gone now. So who else makes decent CD/DVD drives?

I think I read somewhere that BenQ recently decided to exit the optical drive market.Originally posted by: stevty2889
BenQ drives are pretty decent too, it does as well as my NEC drives.

I also heard that Plextor is no longer making their own drives. They're said to be using rebadged Lite-Ons now. :Q
Sigh ... how the mighty have fallen. 🙁

for some reason i believe that either samsung/toshibe (tsst) took over their drive section or they merged with them...something like that
Where's this news from? I've heard about a joint venture, but nothing about Sony assimilating them.Sony has absorbed NEC

Which one -- BenQ or Plextor? I got the Plextor info from a forum over at CDRInfo.com about a month or so ago. Can't recall where I read/heard about BenQ.
Ahhh ... okay. That's a shame, 'cuz BenQ drives were considered among the best. Oh well, the world will keep turning, I guess.Originally posted by: bob4432
