Now that Sony has absorbed NEC, what DVD/CD drives do I buy?

What good brands are out there? NEC was the best for price and reliability and performance, but they are gone now. So who else makes decent CD/DVD drives?

I guess NEC will keep producing same standard h/w after all they have a very large OEM client base. I dont think sony will jeopardize that market...

Well, the problem is that Sony = expensive for mediocre stuff. NEC = quality for reasonable price. Now maybe what this means is that Sony = expensive for quality CD/DVD Drives? Lite-on is not too reliable from what I understand.. now I understand why Sony's drives weren't so hot.
The problem is getting the goods for a good price.

LG is my choice at the moment. LiteOn drives from a few years ago were decent for the price but later ones proved less reliable- at least for me. I've had Sony and others. LG is my best bang for the buck.

LG is my favourite. Used two models at old job extensively with no problems burning hundreds (maybe) of stuff. Just got one at home and it has been great. Lite-On should be good, but I got two recent dud drives from them. One scratched discs and couldn't read stuff, the other couldn't read a lot of stuff nor be updated with new firmware.

Oh, and IIRC, Samsung uses rebadged Lite-Ons.

The Sony/Optiarc (NEC) burners are still good, especially with those guys (Liggy & Dee) at the CDFreaks forums who like to hack the drives and create special firmware for them.

Yep ... Sony drives are just re-branded & higher priced LiteOn's.

Good news is that I've been using LiteOn's almost exclusively for years & have had exactly one DVD drive fail on me ... Samsung makes decent drives too as a fallback.

BenQ drives are pretty decent too, it does as well as my NEC drives.
I think I read somewhere that BenQ recently decided to exit the optical drive market.

I also heard that Plextor is no longer making their own drives. They're said to be using rebadged Lite-Ons now. :Q

Sigh ... how the mighty have fallen. 🙁

for some reason i believe that either samsung/toshibe (tsst) took over their drive section or they merged with them...something like that

wonder if their drives will start to be unable to rip dvds😛

that will be sony's new dvd drm - you can use them to look at data only dvds, but can't watch a movove 🙂 hahaha

I've been using Lite On's and LG's for many years now, with out a single failure...most of my DVD-ROM's and CD-RW's are over 4 years old now and still work as well as the day I bought them.

Which one -- BenQ or Plextor? I got the Plextor info from a forum over at CDRInfo.com about a month or so ago. Can't recall where I read/heard about BenQ.

Ahhh ... okay. That's a shame, 'cuz BenQ drives were considered among the best. Oh well, the world will keep turning, I guess.
