Basically comes down to three options:

1) Let the affected members re-register, you inconvenience a handful of people.
2) You restore everything back to the way it was before the loss happened, inconveniencing a whole lot of people.
3) You perform a nightmarish db merge in attempts to reconcile now with what was lost.

Of those options #1 is by far the most appealing.

#3 isn't really that nightmarish, although I suppose it would require a hell of a lot of disk space.

But they could at least give them back their join dates.

yes, some people really care about post count.

I don't neccessarily *care* about mine, but it does provide a way to measure ones "contributions" to a forum and add to seniority.

Yeah I know what you mean, in a couple days I will have "officially" been here a year and calculate about 20+ lifer transitions.. pretty sad for all of us. 😛

Yeah, I noticed that too. Since lifer is meant as a term of derision and the forums have been around for 6 years, maybe they should bump the postcount requirement up so they're not insulting half the members. 😉

Really it doesn't matter after you've been around ~6 months, but before then I think you're more prone to being flamed.
