Now that Sandy Bridge is out, anyone still going to buy a Nehalem?

Assuming your upgrading or just building new, is anyone out there planning to build with one of the Nehalem chips (i7 860, 870, 920, 930, 950, i5 750, 760 or lower, etc), not that Sandy Bridge is out?

Note: This is only about builds. If you have a PC and don't plan on upgrading or building, the question isn't directed toward you.

If you need an Intel quad core, there is no reason to go socket 1156 at this time. If you want something cheaper then maybe go $100 on a cheap AMD dual core with motherboard. Socket 1366 is out also, unless you need six cores or a lot of PCIe lanes (triple graphics?) or easy 24GB RAM.

So logically speaking, if you are going with 1-2 graphics cards and a quad core, 1155 is your choice.

Easy huge overclocks with the K chips doesn't hurt either.

I went so far as to buy an i7 950 at Micro Center for $199, and a mobo. Then I saw that SB was a monster from Anand's review, and returned the stuff unopened. Instead I have a 2500K and an Asus P8P67 board. So no, no Nehalem for me, I would up skipping that generation. If I already had an LGA 1366 system I doubt I'd make the switch.

1366 isn't worth it anymore. If you want POWA you get Sandy bridge

I'm skipping SB until the -E Socket 2011 series comes out later this fall.

I'd go Socket 1366 until then.

IMO the only brand new hardware worth buying now is right here:

Cheap: Socket AM3 triple/quad.
Expensive: Socket 1155 Sandy Bridge quads.
Best of the Best: Dual socket 1366 server boards.

It's actually a very simple landscape now. If your bottom line is affected by your computers performance dual socket 1366 boards make sense. I wouldnt recommend a single socket of anything else.

My new 2600k just got delivered. Can't wait to get home...

I think 1366 owner shouldn't be too sad, the i7 920 was like awesome for more than 2 years. It's a great deal intel put in it, it's still one of the top platform even now. They more than got their money's worth from the 1366. It's probably the 1156 owner who should be angry, a very short lived platform, even when it just came out, Intel already planning to use 1155 to replace it soon. I just hope 1155 don't turn out the same way as the 1156 been replaced soon by ... you guess it 1154. Damn Intel is good at making money.

Nah, immature people tend to get antsy when they dont have the newest thing. Growing up, several kids had nice systems that they barely used other than for benchmarking and bragging rights. When something new comes out, their awesome system is suddenly obsolete and useless.

In today's Fry's ad, they have the i7 980x Extreme for $999.99 (same price at Amazon). Is there a reason anyone would buy this chip over a 2600K and new motherboard?

I know I wouldn't. Even if nehalem were a drop-in replacement for you any decent upgrade from the lower end to the higher end of socket 1366 would likely cost more than a SB processor and motherboard together. If you have to buy a new motherboard anyway, then it's completely senseless to buy nehalem. In both situations SB is the better option.

So an i7 870 on the 1156 platform is worse than an i7 920? on the 1366 platform? Unless you are using tri-SLI or dual-SLI with an additional Physx card or need a 6-core Intel CPU which start at $900, the 1156 platform is a better value than the 1366 platform.

980X is only needed if your doing extensive video editing and encoding.

SB vs Nehalem in clock for clock gaming isnt that impressive, they're basically in the same ballpark. For SLI/CF users, X58 offers dual 16 lane pci-e vs 2x8 for P67. And we know how well SLI/CF scales on x58. So enthusiast multi-gpu gamers may find x58 preferable to P67.
