Now that i5s been announced for $196, is there any reason for the older yorkfields to remain at $200+ or do you think we will be seeing those prices slashed soon?

I'm not quite ready to abandon all my DDR2 memory just yet but I might be tempted to pick up a bump in cpu speed if the prices drop low enough and ride it out till the 32nm lynnfields

That's what I'm hoping. I'd be looking to move up from my e4500 to e8600 or q9550. Microcenter is already selling q9550 for $160.

In the comments section of the Lynnfield review article, somebody asked a similar question:

"Just checked at Newegg. Is there any error on the price? The newer and more performance i5 750 costs $209. The Q9550 cost $219. That sounds illogical."

A typical smartass reply followed:

"I think it's called having old stock that was purchased before the new announcements. Obviously the folks they are going to be selling to are ones who are updating the processor in an older 775 socket motherboard based system - which with the new announcements are now rapidly receding into the past."

I was under the impression there wouldn't be any 32nm quad-cores based on Nehalem. The next 32nm quad cores we see will be based on Sandy Bridge.

thats what i thought too. but if you're in a position to get a e8600 up to 4.5 ghz or so, then by all means.

I wouldn't expect socket 775 chips to drop much in price, I remember not too long after 45nm C2 was released, the 65nm parts which didn't perform as well actually cost more. New system builders weren't interested, but those who are looking for an upgrade will pick a more expensive cpu before replacing motherboard and cpu.

WHen you are at EOL on a certain socket, the best chips for that socket almost never go down significantly. For all the people holding compatible motherboards who want to do an easy chip replacement the value is still there for the vendors. Heck just look at prices for a top of the line prescott, you can find them for sale upwards of $70 or more.
