Now that Acronis has taken a dump, what's a good imaging SW?

When you use the bootable CD, the OS matters not.

I tried creating a disc image of my Win 7 install with the Acronis Boot Cd created from True Image 9. True Image bitched about not having rights to the drive and would not created the tib file.

Didn't know Vista had an image feature. Does Win 7 have it also?

Version 11 home edition. It's just totally flakey. Hangs, aborts with cryptic error messages. Most just stops imaging whenever and wherever it feels like it. acromis has really dropped the ball. They once owned the market but now their rep is mud.

Have you tried updating your version 11?

I was deeply disappointed with the Vista back up btw. It's really really inflexible. I tried to transfer my Windows image from my old Samsung 500gb drive to a new WD 640gb drive, no go Windows could not do it.

Basically it needs the same exact drive that images were made from.

I gotta disagree! I used the Vista backup when I went from the my old Raptor drive to the VelociRaptor last year. Worked great for me.

Does anyone know what versions of Win7 will include the backup. It was only available in business and ultimate with Vista.

Of course! TI 9 can't even do Vista. In order to do everything in Win 7, you need TI 2009, Build 9796. That is because MS made some last minute NTFS changes in RTM. I have cloned my Windows 7 Ultimate installation and now have a duplicate, bootable, reserve drive in a mobile rack ready to go. (Like this🙂

Clone

If you have a registered copy of TI 2009 (version 12) you can get a complete ISO download of a really enhanced Rescue Media in ISO format - gives you 8 different boot options.

You don't need to have the program installed to use the Rescue Media.

I am using Acronis True Image 11. I needed to contact Acronis for a slightly different version to use on my Intel p35 chipset. It was an easy download and burn, and has worked on every computer and drive I have tried it on.
It also just worked on my Windows 7 rtm copying an sata to an sata drive!
