<< when will the actual price become effective? >>

You would have to think that it would be effective immediately; who would buy one after the press conference but before the price change?

I was told by one of my friends that due to royalties they have already recovered all the money they were losing on XBox'es...but I'm not totally certain.

A $100 price but in a console is unprecedented right? I know they are doing real bad in Japan but don't see why they need to do something that drastic in North America. I guess they want to put the pressure on the competition. MS definitely has the war chest to take such a hit, I don't know if Sony can do the same. It'll be weird seeing the X-Box the same as a Gamecube, X-box seems like it's worth alot more.

I hope MS decides to give current owners two free games or controllers, like they did in Japan!

I hope this pushes the Nintendo Gamecube price down to $150 (or maybe $100). I'm more interested in Resident Evil than any of the current XBOX games (besides DOA 3). Either way, this is a good deal.

The controllers and games was in Europe and AUS. Not Japan. Japan got a limited edition console. Anyway, if they drop their price like that, of course Sony and Nintendo would have to drop their prices as well. The Playstation 2 is long overdue for a price drop anyway. It dropped everywhere else in the world around Christmas.

i think ms was breaking even on those bundles they required people to have last xmas, or maybe just barely losing. (controllers and 1st party software is margin rich for them) at $200 they'd be losing a whole lot more money, even if the price on components has gone down.

if the xbox goes to $199.99 and the gamecube goes to $149.99 i'll have to buy them both. i just played resident evil for the gamecube over the weekend and it is absolutely stunning. the graphics r just amazing.

It's not doing too well in Japan at the moment. The largest problem is that it's a bit large from the Japanese consumer prospective. Also it doesn't have alot of "Japan friendly" games. The only games to have really made an appearance in the Dengeki top 50 for Japan are Halo, DOA 3, and Project Gotham. Everything else kind showed up for a week and dissappeared. I guess it's still a bit early to talk about Halo though since it's only been out a week, but it made the top 10 so I think it deserves a mention (9 on dengeki and 5 on bloomburg).

As for buying the Japanese Xbox for the controller... why? An American version of the japanese controller is coming out. Also if you really needed it that bad, you could just buy the japanese controller and save yourself some massive shipping costs. Not to mention that so far, more Xbox games are out in America. You japanese exclusive games are Shikigami no Shiro, Metal Dungeon and Bistro Cupid. I guess if you really wanted to play Bistro Cupid then more power to you.

<< About as bad as the Dreamcast did. >>

Wrong, Dreamcast did better. :p Dreamcast regularly gets games in the top 50 even now in Japan. Sega has a bigger cult following than many people realize.

This sounds like a typical Microsoft move, their answer to everything. That's how they killed Netscape, just giving IE away for free and gaining all the market share. Luckily, game quality is a much bigger factor than console price in the console wars, so even if they gave away the xbox for free, I doubt they would put any other console out of business (at least I hope not). Incidentally, this is why everyone is suing Microsoft, for some pretty ruthless sales practices.

Isn't the smaller Japanese controller the same as the Xbox Controller S in this week's Best Buy ad (page 4)? They have a lot of these smaller controllers at the BB near me and this controller is noticably smaller. Too bad they didn't have one on the display Xbox to try out.
