I set dual prime mixed test when I left for work this morn. I get home and pull my case outta desk so my cousin can look at my setup through side window. Cpu fan was not on, dual prime still running no errors, 53c by gigabyte software. Whay was my fan off? Was xp the fault, sleep mode? I do not have any cnq running, that I know of. Should fan be off at 53c under any progy?
I could not get pc to wake up quick enough, so I shut down hard. I noticed the fan kick when the system woke and started fast shutdown!

Oh yea ,

gigabyte k8ns ultra, 3800 x2

Update, I was playing bf2 when all became slow and unusable. I looked in side window of case and cpu fan not on. When I held down pwr button to shut down, the fan kicked on. I have also been having problems with some corruption in bios when attempting to oc. My Plex sata dvdrw, on native controller, is giving lots of problems too. The cpu hsf is brand new, has to be mobo!

Is my mobo crapping out on me? Is this enough reason to rma? How is gigabytes rma, easy, fast?

Thanx for the help!

If it was in sleep mode, then prime95 wasn't actualy running, active proccess go idle while in sleep mode..and sleep mode can turn off the fans..

Well 8.5 hours still passed, but in sleep mode, everything is suspended to the ram. Your idle temp is 30c with the fan on..but whats the idle temp with the fan off..looks to be 53c..do a search there was another thread by somebody else with exactly the same thing not to long ago.

Also while I was thinking bout this, how many peeps actually think they are getting a certin amount of prime test in, but only have their pc sleeping?

i disable sleep mode by going to properties (right click desktop), then going to screensaver, then power settings, and putting everything to NEVER.

that does it for me

Flashed to older bios, hooked back up plex drive to native sata controller, drive was working much better but fan stopped again. Seems to only be doing it when I use my plextor drive. I tried to put my raptors in raid on the native a few weeks ago and install kept failing, so I just put them on the secondary controller.

I have the same mobo, and I had the "fan problem" with the stock cooler (X2) as well. If you have Smartfan enabled in the bios, the bios will limit the voltage to the fan depending on the temps (it steps from 6v to 12v tepending on the temperature). If the temps are below 60 degrees, the fan turns off. 60 seems to be the 100% voltage trigger. I don't know why, but I think the stock AMD fan doesn't like smart fan control (ie. voltage reduction). It could be a thermal fan, i don't know.

Once I disabled the smart fan function, the fan ran all the time. Of course, the fan is loud so I replaced the cooler with an XP-120 with a panaflo fan.

As with BF2 and your other problems, try the fan fix first. Then make sure you have the X2 driver installed and the new MS hotfix installed. There is an issue with multi-core/multi-processor systems and XP-PRO (32) that the hot fix resolves.

As for overclocking, make sure everything works 100% at stock speeds before proceeding. When you do OC, disable Cool and Quiet as it causes issues.

Edit:

The nForce3 sata ports don't "lock". When you OC, you will get problems with sata drives (optical/hd) connected to those ports. From what I understand, the silicon image ports do lock, so you should have better luck. See: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/sho...ad.php?t=47401&highlight=ga-k8ns+ultra
