Now is the time Computer buffs to show true support for AMD

I have to agree with some of the others here that this is just how capitalism works. I too have been very tempted to pick up a P4 1.6A, but the price of DDR has deterred me. I love the way AMD has finally brought some competition to the CPU industry and if AMD were to go under, it would be quite a blow to the industry, not just in pricing but in the speed of innovation.

<< Even though I'm saving my pennies for a dual hammer setup with 1 MB cache each Proc, remember that intel is comming out with a P4 varient with x86-64 extensions based on a 90 nm process. Nobody knows of yet what the performance will be like, but intel does have very good engineers and is driven by performance, I could see the possibility of them comming out with a real winner. I do hope AMD will take over as the king od silicon and then it starts seesawing back and foorth so that all of us get the best value we can when building out PC's >>

Intel wont let them be the winners ...... and did everyone forget about prescott:

- Starting at 3.6-4.0Ghz
- .09um micron
- 800MHz fsb
- 1MB L2 cache
- yam hill tech
- duel channel DDR2 400Mhz

😀 thats what the hammer will face .... and they are changing the core alot too 😀 As for AMD, I still dont like them, and I really hate jerry. Glad hes leaving 😀 But they wont die out, even intel wants them standing (monopoly fees)

According to theinquirer,

The precot will "This will allow Intel, when it introduces its 90 nanometer "Prescott" technology next year to use 50 nanometer CMOS".
BTW, i heard that the prescott will be a new core from scratch? i dont think so? Anyone able to confirm of refute this?

I believe Prescott will be a P4 with HT enabled and possibly more cache. As for Prescott adding x86-64 instructions, that's news to me.

AMD is the best proc. for the money and preforms better clock for clock. This is the reason I will always look first at an AMD proc.. It amazes that although the actuall clock speed of the Athlons might be slower they still preform better than the P4 systems which are clocked higher and still cost more. Now I may build a Northwood system soon if they cut proces like that just to play arround with it but it will not be my main system and the next major system build I do for my self with be an AMD system using the DDR333 msi board (KT3 Ultra). The northwood will get the old parts from my current system that arn't going in the new athlon system. AMD ALL THE WAY!!!! lol 😀

I like Intel better than AMD because it's a much cooler chip. AMD produces so much heat that you need fan that is as loud as a blowdrier. Plus you can't fry a Pentium 4 unlike the athlons which can easily be fried.
I doubt it that an athlon setup can survive for 3 years of use because of the heat issues. On the other hand, the pentium 4 may even last 5 or more years due to the highly advanced thermal design.
And now intel is going to slash their price by 60%! Talk about bang for your bucks!

And on what data do you base your life expectancy observation?

I'm well aware how hot Athlons can get, but I'm sure they have no problem lasting 3 years. I'm sure T-Birds will still be kicking 5 years from now, just like K6s and original Pentiums are still kicking today.

I hope Intel realy does cut prices like this rumor suggests, It would give me an excuse to build a second machine for myself.

<< I've done my bit for the welfare of AMD..... I bought a Athlon XP this year >>

Same here and I like it 😀

I'd rather have the new P4A, more precisely a P4 built from the newer .13 layout rather than the original P4-A layout. The new P4A-2.4GHz cores use the new P4A layout. Intel ought to label them as P4B's.

DOUBLE POSTED

I have been reading alot of everyones post.... but everyone seems to miss the point!!!

1) if intel does slash the prices... this spells trouble for AMD
a) AMD does not have the deep pockets as INTEL does
b) With intel being so cheap more OEM will go with intel because intel is well known to the public!!! (non techs)
c) And... yes the inthusiasts do matter, dont know if people have been paying attention to the #'s but in ever stat that i have seen about CPUs, i see AMD taking the lead!! losing us is BAD!! and losing all that $$$$$$ mean no more AMD

with this in mind, i feel that all you people that say " im goin for price/performance even if it means buying intel" are such dum F#$%Ks!!!!! (no offence) let me just remind you of what it was like w/o the competition.... $300 for a slow ass CPU and $1000 for the best... now i dont know about u but i like paying $30 for the slowest and $250 for the fastest!! i dont know.. it might be just me????

like someone said... INTEL GOT DEEP POCKETS... they can last with out u buying there crap... remember they still have 70% of market share. SO

all i got to say is

LETS KEEP HOPE ALIVE !!!!!!!!!!!!

i think you are missing the point. if this is true, then just how the hell did amd survive with crap processors like the k5-k6 line? my p233 laptop is faster than my k6-2@500 desktop.

the point is, price cuts, and price wars are normal. amd is saving up alot of room to cut as well. havn't you seen their pricing page yet?

though i'm assembling a athlon mp system currently, it's because its the bang for buck. a similar xeon system would cost me both my kidneys.

Not a another amd vs intel thread. I like intel cause of blah blah blah. I like amd cause of blah blah blah. All stuff we've heard before and all valid points. So let's heard them one more time!!!!

Geez, this oh so human tendency to pledge blind loyalty towards anything you can grasp onto. Oohh ooh, that politician is so trustworthy, we'll stand behind him no matter how much of a sumbag he is. I've used records since the good old days and I don't wanna switch. Who do you think you are? Some kind of market-god who knows what's best? You're a consumer! Honestly, this self-righteous near-crusade-like zealotry is simply astronishing.

What an absurd propostion!

Americans always love the underdog but real Americans buy what they want.

I watched and read these forums for months before I recently registered and began posting. Most of what I witnessed was Intel bashing and AMD loving, from the dweebs who post here. With the advent of the P4 Northwoods, many of you kids are admitting that the AMD solution is imperfect due to noise from the need to running so many case fans that your house is drafty, high CPU temps, CPU failure, squirrely chipsets, etc. It was never about quality, it was always about cost. When the Durons and Tbirds were cheaper than their Intel counterpart, they were better to your way of thinking.

At their best, AMD has only been a wannabe CPU manufacturer and their real value has been to force Intel to introduce new CPUs at a faster pace and at a lower price due to the competition. My hat's off to AMD for that and for that reason alone. I hope AMD continues to have a presense in the marketplace if only to keep Intel honest.

As for me, I have only bought, and will only buy, motherboards with Intel chipsets and Intel CPU's; they are the real deal.

If it is your personal mission to keep a lesser product afloat, put your money where your mouth is and buy their crappy products. Better yet, take the money and buy lotto tickets. You might hit the big one someday.

I"m going to buy an AMD because I'm stupid. I know Intel makes the better chip for the buck right now but I dont care. AMD ownz me lol

I agree dude 100% ..... I really dont like jerry, there non-thermal protection and there pure hate for intel. The hammer design is a great concept on paper .... if they can pull it off .... ill give them props. Intel all the freaken way!

Well I have been building computers for some time both AMD and Intel, Some of the post are, Well I won't go into that but AMD will be around for a long time, When they come out with the K6's Intel tried to stop mainboard makers from making boards for them, Like if you sell AMD we might lose your next order and if you sell AMD we will have to put you at the bottom of the list on your next order, AMD never tried any of that just keep making the processor better and better till AMD over took Intel in sells, But some of the post, AMD runs so hot it won't last, To loud, Will burn up, Well I have a XP1900 that you can't hear run, When you turn it off you have to look at the power light to make sure it is off and it runs cool, I have had more than one Athlon's processor fan go out and it just over heats after a while and shuts off, Have never had a processor burn up even without the fan working, What is the guy smoking that says his laptop 233 was faster that a K6, A K6 what, but any way just my 2 cents
