It's sort of like Mormons not drinking.

"Why do you always take at least two Mormons fishing?"

"If you take only one, he'll drink all your beer."

Interesting that the closer to the poles you are, the more you drink. It probebly has something to do with the cold and dark days.

It has a lot to do with it. The more miserable your lot in life, the more you drink!

Russia is Russia because Russia. :awe:

If we keep Canada drunk enough, they won't see us coming.

America seems to be going in a strange direction regarding mind altering substances. We're legalizing pot, but at the same time we're slowly turning more and more against alcohol and cigarettes. I get the sense that there are more people who don't drink in America now than there ever was before, and most of them refrain for health and image reasons rather than religious ones. Underage drinking seems to be in a sharp decline as well. What's happening to us these days? I'm not really complaining about it because it seems like we're turning away from the dangerous drugs in favor of the safer ones, but it's a completely unexpected turn of events IMO.

So what your saying is when we don't demonize, and in some cases legalize marijuana people stop smoking and drinking?

Odd.

It's honestly the one sign, of very very few available signs, that actually gives me hope that there might just be life left in this country, and a sign of lasting hope.

It's a civilization waking up and demonstrating intelligence. It's the result of ignoring religion, ignoring government, and looking strictly at the available data and science. That's what a civilized body of people should do - we are supposed to run the damn country, so it should be how we like it, regardless of the personal hopes and dreams of individual leaders.

It's a better medicine, and a better intoxicant, in the minds of many.

I can enjoy drinking, but more than anything, I'd much rather the herb than the drink. It's more useful and, unlike alcohol, you can control the actual "style" of intoxication through the manipulation of the different component chemicals of natural marijuana. Want to be sociable and friendly and full of vigor? Choose this strain. Want to get couch-lock, watch a movie, and slow down? Choose that strain.

I think you guys misread the map.

Mexico is unusually LOW on the consumption chart.
No, you see SunnyD is trying to explain why it's low. You pass out and can't drink anymore.

I'm suggesting the data is invalid. :D

Well kinda. You see the colder it gets the more manliness is needed to survive said cold leading to an increase in the manliness of men in those countries.

The more of a man you are the more beer you drink leading to the type of results seen in the infographic.
